mallewi
A unique, multidisciplinary artist from Baltimore now based in Los Angeles, mallewi (styled in all lowercase) weaves their five-octave vocal range into a deeply personal, genre-fluid sound that blends poetry, music, and visual art. Self-taught and soul-driven, mallewi pulls from a wide range of influences—from Maxwell, Living Colour, Seal, Incubus, and Imogen Heap, to an eclectic mix of deep house, folk, disco, R&B, soul, funk, rock, retro game music, and more—to create work that lives where vulnerability meets grit and innovation.
With a limitless imagination and a DIY spirit, mallewi has been a creative since childhood—winning citywide writing contests, excelling in theatre, receiving an International Baccalaureate Diploma with a concentration in visual arts, and even crafting a mural of Billie Holiday the Eubie Blake Center at just 12 years old. While experiencing bouts of depression as a young adult, mallewi coped by writing poetry. From there, songwriting, teaching themself how to sing, and then learning production. mallewi's artistry is constantly evolving.
2019 saw the release of THE GARDEN, a folk-soul EP, followed by RETINA in 2020, an mix-genre EP which reached #21 on iTunes' Top 25 Alternative Album Summer Releases. Now, mallewi is gearing up for their next chapter—APOLLO, an intimate exploration of love, loss, sexuality, existentialism, and renewal—all set against a lush backdrop of neo-soul, alt-pop, and R&B.
mallewi is a name to watch with a story still unfolding...
